On today’s edition of Black History Month Port Arthur we celebrate the life of notable African American inventor Garrett Morgan.
This morning you’ll undoubtedly stop at a few traffic lights on your way to work. Garrett Morgan is one of the inventors who made improvements to the traffic signals over a hundred years ago eventually leading to those we know today.
How about the clothes you have on today? Garrett Morgan also held several patents for improved traffic lights.
Many feel his most significant invention is what would become known as the gas mask. Garrett Morgan invented a device to save the lives of miners who were trapped in an underground mine filled with dangerous gases. He went on to create gas masks for the US Army that saved lives in World War I.
American hero? We think so.
We hope you have enjoyed today’s edition of Black History Month Port Arthur.
